siiksaanapšiił (seek-saw-nup-sheelth) - the tla-o-qui-aht word for surfing
siiksaana refers to going in with the waves, and šiił refers to doing something over and over again.
The Surf Langage Card was done in collaboration with the ƛaʔuukʷiʔatḥ Language Program. We look forward to incorporating more Nuu-chah-nulth language into our programming and surf sessions.
The map of beaches with surf breaks in Tla-o-qui-aht and Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ territory was done in collaboration with Gisele Martin, the Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks and the Ucluelet Culture and Language Department. We hope this map will support those living and visiting these homelands to learn the traditional place names, and to take care of these places and spaces which have been stewarded by the Nuu-chah-nulth for millennia.
Thank you to tje Tla-o-qui-aht Lanaguage Department for this video on pronunciation from our surf language cards.
